This program has been designed to provide the student with the opportunity to develop comprehensive entry level skills in the various aspects of a medical office or hospital; laboratory abilities, patient interaction, and office functions such as billing and computer operation. With a maximum class size of 15, students will havethe experience of 280 hours of internship in an actual medical office or hospital facility.

The program is equipped with skeletons, phlebotomy practice equipment, EKG machines, examining tables, personal computers and other equipment.Clinical duties vary according to State law and include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. Medical assistants collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies,and sterilize medical instruments. They instruct patients about medication and special diets, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, authorize drug refills as directed, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, draw blood, prepare patients for x rays, take electrocardiograms, remove sutures, and change dressings.

Internship – 30 Hours

All students are required to successfully complete a minimum of 30 hours of clinical supervision in a nursing home. The student will be required to demonstrate the performance of basic skills prior to being scheduled for clinical supervision, to the satisfaction of the instructor.
